ISRAELI MAN IN BUS RAMPAGE
5.8.2005. 08:30:04

A teenaged Israeli soldier has been lynched by a crowd after shooting dead four people on a bus in an Israeli Arab town.

The shooting is the first deadly incident in connection with Israel's controversial plan to pull troops and settlers from Gaza, and has ignited fears that more violence will follow.

The 19-year-old Jewish man, believed to have deserted the army in protest over the pullout, opened fire inside a bus in the northern Galilee town of Shfaram.

Four Israeli Arab passengers died in the hail of bullets, including the bus driver, two students and a local resident.

Four other passengers were injured, two of them seriously, in the Druze neighbourhood of Shfaram.

Hundreds of people flocked to the blood-smeared bus and reportedly lynched the gunman, named as Eden Natan Zaada, reportedly from the Jewish settlement of Tapuah in the West Bank.

However there has been no police confirmation the mob killed the man.

There are reports he was a member of the outlawed extremist Kach party.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has called for calm, condemning the shooting as a "reprehensible act by a bloodthirsty Jewish terrorist who sought to attack innocent Israeli civilians".

"This terrorist event was a deliberate attempt to harm the fabric of relations among all Israeli citizens," said Mr Sharon.

An additional 2,000 police have been dispatched to the area.

Chairman of the main settler organisation Yesha, Bentzi Lieberman, has condemned the shooting and said disengagement "has led individuals to lose their head."

The Palestinian Authority urged the Israeli authorities to prevent similar attacks.

The shooting comes less than two weeks before the withdrawal is due to begin.

Mr Sharon has vowed his disengagement plan will proceed, with about 9,000 Jewish settlers in Gaza and four small areas of the West Bank to be removed.

The plan has been met with anger by many Jewish settlers and their supporters.
