December 25th - Solemnity of Christmas Day

The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the most beloved and the most
popular of the Christian feasts

? When Jesus of Nazareth was born c. October of 4BC, the 25th of December
was the Winter solstice on the Roman calendar. Roman pagans celebrated
that day as the birthday of the Sun-God Mithra, which sort of makes sense
if one thinks about it since the Winter solstice marks the beginning of
more sunlight and shorter nights.

But is terms of Christ the new light brings humanity out of the darkness of sin.
The birthday of Christ brings new and wonderful meaning to the new light.

According to history, the Roman
Christian church switched 25 Dec. from Mithra's birthday to Jesus'
birthday in 380, the same year that the punishment for participating in
any non-Christian celebration was crucifixion - thus proving once again
that turnabout is fair play.

Mithra had no birthday. "He" was just a ray of diffuse sunlight who "lived" at
a time before man appeared on the earth.
