Actually Christ called Simon as "Cephas/kephas", which mean "rock" in Aramaic.
The Greek translation is lacking, the closest is petra (piece of the rock) and
petros (small rock). Peter is a middle of the road result.

Greek, which is the first translation from the spoken Aramaic, is a very poor
language to use to translate.
