Maybe not so far anymore. Luther and Henry VIII have been dead a long
time. The Spirit of Christ is still alive in some of us, Catholic and
Protestant alike. Let's ask Him...together at the cross...where the
blood still sprinkles His righteousness on us both.

"Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth
so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the
heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable
seed, through the living and enduring word of God." (1Pe 1:22-23
NRSV)

"and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled
blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." (Heb 12:24
NRSV)

"For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we
should love one another. Not as Cain, [who] was of that wicked one, and
slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were
evil, and his brother's righteous." (1Jo 3:11-12 AV)

"For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and
seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God's
righteousness." (Ro 10:3 NRSV)

"whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood,
effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because
in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously
committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is
righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus." (Ro
3:25-26 NRSV)

"the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who
believe. For there is no distinction," (Ro 3:22 NRSV)

A message posted about the subject at a Christian unity email group:

The "About Us" page at a website where Catholics, Protestants, and
Orthodox can come together in prayers for Christian untiy:
http://scuwpg.org/us.htm

I certainly wouldn't want to discourage any efforts at reunification, but 1)
the Catholic Church is not going to change its teachings to accommodate
Protestants (except maybe married Protestant ministers becoming priests upon
conversion) and 2) there are teachings on the subject of marriage and sex
that will be difficult for Protestants to conform.

Spiritual ecumenism, spiritual Christian unity, is not about creating
"a new Church, but a Church profoundly renewed spiritually, capable
of surmounting the divisions of the past."

I already gave you several references, and links to many more, about
what the Bible says.

Here's what Catholic leaders say:

"Cardinal Kasper, announcing the Vademecum, said: "We are at the
beginning of a new ecumenism, profoundly connected to a new
evangelization, which will not create a new Church, but a Church
profoundly renewed spiritually, capable of surmounting the divisions of
the past."

"The cardinal added that while the theological dialogue continues at
the international level -- the "official" ecumenism -- there is also a
growing "spiritual ecumenical network, which is perhaps more important
and promising than the other." In this context, he said, the Vademecum
will be of key importance."

"The quest for unity among Christians is a task that concerns all
believers and requires a change of heart", says John Paul II.

My part of this conversation is over. If you won't be guided into
the truth that "requires a change of heart" by the Holy Spirit
speaking through the Bible, through me, or through your own leaders of
the Catholic Church, I certainly can't help you. It's not my job.

"A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you;
and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a
heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my
statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances." (Eze 36:26-27
NRSV)

"And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of
his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded
us." (1Jo 3:23 NRSV)

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the
truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he
hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." (Joh
16:13 NRSV)

"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the
sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:" (Joh 1:12 AV)

"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of
God." (Ro 8:14 AV)

Benedict XVI:
"The desire for unity on the part of every Christian Community and
every individual believer and the power to achieve it is a gift of the
Holy Spirit and goes hand in hand with a more profound and radical
fidelity to the Gospel (cf. encyclical "Ut Unum Sint," No. 15).

"We realize that at the base of the commitment to ecumenism there is
the conversion of heart, as the Second Vatican Council clearly affirms:
"There can be no ecumenism worthy of the name without interior
conversion. For it is from newness of attitudes of mind, from
self-denial and unstinted love, that desires of unity take their rise
and develop in a mature way" (decree "Unitatis Redintegratio," No. 7).
http://www.zenit.org/english/visualizza.phtml?sid=83863

"a more profound and radical fidelity to the Gospel"

"Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that
I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you
stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to
the message that I proclaimed to you-unless you have come to believe
in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn
had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the
scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third
day in accordance with the scriptures," (1Co 15:1-4 NRSV)

Like Graz said, "May the prayer of Christian unity draw us closer in
the world today. "
