Most people are not righteous, but rather they are wicked:
Matthew 7:13-14
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate,
and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many
there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which
leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
It follows that most appearances of angels will be devils in disguise,
not angels of God.
The problem is that there are EVIL spirits, as well as angels of God.
For example:
Luke 22:31
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath
desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
2 Corinthians 2:11
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not
ignorant of his devices.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers,
transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an
angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be
transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end
shall be according to their works.
Ephesians 6:11-12
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to
stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places.
1 Timothy 4:1-2
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter
times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience
seared with a hot iron;
1 Peter 5:8
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may
devour:
1 John 4:1
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits
whether they are of God: because many false prophets are
gone out into the world.
Revelation 12:7-9
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels
fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his
angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more
in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent,
called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole
world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were
cast out with him.
One way to determine what God wants of us is to have some measure of
the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit is given to those who OBEY God:
Acts 5:32
32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also
the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
So we should start with OBEDIENCE, and then proceed from there. Those
who reject the requirement to "quit sinning", namely those who pretend
that they are saved, but continue to deliberately sin, will certainly
be abandoned by the Holy Spirit, and left vulnerable to deceiving
spirits.
