"European commercial radio trade group says ‘no’ to universal FM
switch-off date"
At the start of its annual conference held in Brussels on 11/12
February 2010, the Association of European Radios [AER], the trade
group representing 4,500+ European commercial radio stations
(including RadioCentre members in the UK), issued the following press
statement:
“AER considers that setting a date for the switch-off of analogue
radio services is currently impossible. Indeed, the question of which
kind of technology will be used should be solved first. ...
That's an argument that has been used to many times to be credible anymore.
The answer to that is very simple: "you have one year to descide for
yourself which standard the AER proposes;. If you can't manage to do so
(which is very lickely) we will descide for you".
Once that is done, legislation can then be drown up that of -say- 2014,
every radio-set sold in the EEA should at least support the following
technologies: the DAB family, the DRM family and (optionally) ESR; and
that in the following bands: LW, MW, 11 meter, band II, band III and L-band.
Broadcasters still have the possibility to start broadcasting in another
technology, but it then up to them to persuade the radiomakers to
support yet that technology too.
Things that still can be done or descided:
- Allocate a couple of MHz in band II European-wide for DRM+ (which is
then included in the "must be supported" list)
- Should certain SW bands be included in the "must support" list?
One option is the 40 m band. This band is a "local" band (i.e.
Europe-wide :-) ) and can be used by broadcasters like RTL to provide
"Europe-wide" services in DRM). Another options is the 22 meter band
(currently as good as unused in Europe).
- Should ESR be included in the "must support technologies" list? Only
L-band or also S-band?
- Should podcasting be included in the "must supported technologies"
list? Podcasting over the internet, or using over-the-air
broadcasting-technologies (like MOT)?
Podcasting is a element that might become very important for local
community radio.
- Should internet be included in the "must supported technologied" list?
Cheerio! Kr. Bonne.
