Re: Internet radio at busy times

Anyone got the Tevlon which is in Aldi at £49.99? I wondered about
buying one.

Read the discussion boards on the Reciva website. The Tevlon uses a Reciva
chipset.

Note that some brands are better than others when it comes to updating the
firmware on the radios.
However, there is an argument that the cheap ones (£50 or less) can be
bought as a punt, but knowing there isn't much chance of an upgrade. Whereas
one or two more expensive makers are also yonks out of date. Whereas other
expensive makers are on the ball with new updates.

On two Saturday evenings now, I have noticed that my Quattro 4
Internet radio does not work. It works fine at most other times. I
assume this is due to congestion on the information superhighway. My
broadband is ADSL through Virgin Media.

Has anyone else experienced this difficulty? Am I right in assuming
this is a broadband issue? Is this normal? Will BT's upgrade
roll-out (I have forgotten the name) solve this?

Ignore what Silk has to say - that's good advice in general, and not
just limited to what he says about the Internet.

The different reasons for why an Internet radio stream would buffer
are as follows:

* The Internet radio station's server is too busy or not set up very
well To test this, see if other radio stations are affected, for example
the BBC stations, because they're usually reliable. If other
stations aren't affected but there's a station that isn't playing
back properly then it's likely a problem with that station's server

* The Internet itself is congested

To test this, tune into stations on your computer, and if all
stations are suffering from the same problem then it's likely to be
the Internet being congested that's the problem (or it's your own
broadband speed) * Your broadband speed might be temporarily low

To test this, do an ADSL speed test to see how fast your broadband
speed is. I've read a number of threads on uk.telecom.broadband
where people have been saying that their broadband speed fluctuates
wildly. And I'm on Virgin, and I've also experienced this very
occasionally, but my broadband speed has never consistently been
just a few hundred kbps, like some people are saying they get on
Virgin. --
