It's one thing if you need to faff about to get this sorted on your
desktop. If you use Linux, chances are that you're a bit more technically
minded than a "typical" user, you'll get no end of advice concerning how
to address the issue, and complete freedom to mess around with your system
to fix it.

I'm technically minded when it comes to the core unix side of it (I
build my own kernels for example) , but I find the Desktops and their
apps unnecessarily opaque and awkward. The amount of times I found
myself bouncing around from website to website just to get one app to
work I've lost count of. I just can't be bothered anymore. Admittedly
Suse tends to come somewhat crippled in the A/V stakes but even so ,
it shouldn't be this painful.

One thing I've found myself doing is installing a typical LiveCD such a
Ubunty, Sabayon, or Mint 3.1 (my latest plat), and then installing
alternative far simpler media players used by stripped-down mini-distros,
or more focused ones (ZenWalk for example).

I'd *really* like to love Amarok for instance (I can see it's a labour of
love), but it's overcomplicated and crashes too frequently, so I'm using
streamtuner/alsaplayer/xmms.

This way I feel that I get good core support with apt, auto hardware
detection and the like, but cut out a good chunk of the fat. The whizzy 3d
Beryl stuff only comes out to demonstrate that it *could* do that, before
I revert to Ion3 or occasionally Fluxbox.

However, what my elderly in-laws would make of all that carry-on, when all
they want is to listen to BBC7 / theJazz is fairly obvious. It just isn't
ready for them yet, whatever my prompting.
