Well Richard, we like the things we like and we dislike the things we
don't like. The music we like we call 'good' and the music we don't like
we call 'bad'. These labels, 'good' or 'bad' reflect our own individual
preferences and we can't demand that these should be accepted as
universal acknowledged truths.

There's the most terrific fun to be had from arguing about the relative
merits of, say, St Paul's on the one hand and Reading Bus Station on the
other. What enjoyment we used to derive forty years from arguing
nonsense about whether or not Jimi Hendrix was a 'better' guitar player
than Segovia.

But the point I was trying to make is that we can recognize some
things as being better crafted than others, irrespective of whether we
happen to like them.

Yes, I'm pleased that the BBC takes classical music seriously, too. The
reason for this has nothing to do with the alleged inherent superiority
of the music, it's because it happens to be supported by a relatively
small number of big-hitters. This is also why it gets all the bits on DAB.

Not sure that I agree with all your reasoning. I'd say it gets more
bits because (1) much of R3 is original in-house production, which is
arguably more deserving of BBC bits than material supplied the
commercial recording industry in pursuit of its own agenda; (2) since
R3 is rather unsatisfactory as audio wallpaper, those who do listen to
it probably listen more attentively and critically; (3) the BBC has to
be careful not to super-serve popular music, since it's something that
the commercial sector is more than willing to provide without cost to
the licence-payer. But I think we have been this way before ;-)
