I certainly completely disagree with Kristoff! ;-)
4/5 Mio receivers are only T-DAB compatible in UK (if we keep runnig
at the same pace, there will be one or 2 millions in addition by end
of next year).
We need to wait for most of them to be replaced by bistandard
T-DAB/T-DAB+ before switching to AAC+ so that only a few remaining
people have to replace their old receivers with the help of the
government or of the broadcasters (adapted funds, like for analogue TV
swith off).
5 to 7 years is meant to be the average time to renew the TV market,
so let's consider up to 10 years to get enough bi-standard radio
receivers so that we can actually turn off old DAB broadcasting (and
NOT begin DAB+ broadcasting, which could just begin next year if some
want it, but only in addition to old DAB broadcast).
So UK can probably switch off old DAB broadcast in around 10 years, if
everything go smoothly next year for DAB+, but can also probably begin
DAB+ broadcast next year ... if some want it (but then in competition
within the 30% margin, i.e in competition with mobile TV).
I thought you originally meant that AAC+ couldn't begin for 10 years, but
now I see what you mean.
I don't think it'll take 10 years before we can switch the MP2 services off,
because if the sales are anything like the graph on:
http://www.digitalradiotech.co.uk/articles/All-DAB-receivers-will-be-obsolete-in-a-few-years-time.php
then I don't see any point in continuing with MP2 after about 7 or 8 years
from now.
Everyone agrees? ;)
Everyone disagrees with Kristoff. ;-)
