*For example Time FM 106.8 from Shooters Hill in SE London which still
broadcasts out to Dartford, Swanley and beyond but is now just called
"South East London's Time 106.8". They dropped "NW Kent" from the
Jingles and now never mention it despite quoting the "South East London"
phrase every 10 seconds. I can't describe how annoying it is to be
described as part of SE London when you don't want to be, so now I just
don't listen anymore.
That is a strange reason to not listen to a radio station I must say. It
may be annoying to you but I guess most listeners won't give a monkeys.
If you look at their MCA map
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/radiolicensing/mcamaps/al040.pdf
you'll see that it is intended to reach only the edges of Swanley and
Dartford. Looking at the Greater London boundary more than 90% of their
MCA is indeed Greater London, so you can understand why they removed
references to Kent.
Not wishing to kick-off a political debate, but I'm on the edge of Greater
London and I hate being described as part of "London", particulary "South
East London". Most of the MCA they transmit to doesn't even have London
addresses and I wager most people living in that part wouldn't describe
themselves as living in "south-east London". For us lot in Bexley with our
Kent addresses, "south east London" is that area next door to the west
that's a lot more urban and gloomy ;-)
Every time I see a map for Time's 106.8 coverage it seems to get smaller.
It started off life offically broadcasting north of the Thames as well to
Barking/Havering and parts of Essex, then they got removed from the map, now
most of Dartford and Swanley appear to have been chopped off as well. Not
so long ago I got hold of the Time (then, Millenium) adverstising map and it
showed full coverage of Dartford and Swanley and areas beyond (including
fringes of Gravesend). Propagation from Shooters Hill is actually rather
good to the east - I can easily receive fairly solid reception of Time's
106.8 transmission on my car radio in Aylesford, near Maidstone about 20
miles away; for a little 100+80W transmitter that seemed rather impressive.
