I can. What you say doen't follow logically at all. Some people say
that expensive loudspeaker cables sound better than cheap ones, even
when there is no measureable difference between them,

There is obviously a measurable difference between 16-bit and 24-bit and
44.1 and 192 kHz.

but that
doesn't mean there actually is a difference in the sound quality. If
the cables are electrically identical, they must be performing
identically, because that's what identical means. Just because
somebody *says* they can hear a difference it doesn't mean they
*can*. In fact, a common circumstance in which people make claims
like this is just after they've spent a lot of money on something,
and human nature being what it is, I suspect this is a major factor.

Yes, yes, I know, but there is obviously a measurable difference, and people
do seem to be consistently saying that they can hear a difference.

16 bit linear encoding should give a dynamic range of 96dB, which is
probably at least 40dB more than the range between the acoustic noise
floor and the upper limit of tolerability in most domestic
environments. If nobody can possibly hear the full existing range,
adding another 48 dB to it would make no discernible difference at
all. It would be as effective as trading in a 96mph car for a 144mph
one and then only driving it in town.

Dynamic range isn't the issue, the issue is that you've got an extra 8 bits
to play with, so all samples can be encoded at significantly higher accuracy
than before.
