It's probably not bad recorded, its, like 95% of current pop
releases, badly mastered. Now take that Depeche Mode or
any current top 10 hit (which all look and sound the same) and
run it thru yet another mastering chain called onair processing.

Yes, you could be right. Either way, it's a deficiency of the material, not
the medium. CDs are capable of carrying 20kHz audio with about 100dB S/N
ratio, no speed variations, no extraneous noises, no sensitivity to
vibration while a disk is playing and no deterioration each time the disk
is played, none of which can be matched by any mechanical recording system.
However, garbage in, garbage out, as they say.
