But the supplied charger only charges the supplied batteries (it states this in the user guide). Question: why won't it charge other makes of NiMH batts at 2 or 2.4mAH? Is the charger current limited? Thanks
If it's anything like my Philips portable CD player, the Philips batteries supplied have no plastic sleeve round the approx 1cm at the negative end of the battery, unlike other batteries which are covered over the full length.of the battery. The battery compartment itself has an extra terminal for each cell which makes contact with that bare side of the battery. If you use fully sleeved batteries they won't charge.
As to why they've done this I couldn't say, other than to boost sales of their own batteries. Higher capacity batteries would presumably just take longer to charge but you'd have to strip the end first.
It prevents alkaline batteries from being 'charged' and the consequent damage. To use other brands you can always strip some of the insulating sleeve off (or use an external charger).
