Thanks for all the advice.
I travelled around today with my 5 m of 50 ohm cable (soldered to the
original wire string connecting points on the receiver) and the good
reception in my local area rapidly deteriorated into all varieties of
bubbling mud elsewhere, as I'd expected! I'll look in Maplins tomorrow for
a rod around 12.5 in as recommended and a magmount base. Should I keep the
cable run as short/long as possible, or doesn't that really matter?
