What would be the best way for me to completely make that confidential
data irrecoverable? *destroying the HD is not an option*
Unrecoverable from who, and for how long?
Overwrite the entire disk with pseudo-random data. Once is enough. Three
times if you're a bit paranoid. Follow specs if you're in a job - the
specs don't necessarily make any sense but you won't get fired if you
follow them.
If you're worried about alient tech or super spies you could do very many
overwrites with a lot of different data patterns and psuedo random data.
Your time, your money.
Be aware that the popular "Gutmann Method" is for different drive
controllers - and so is a bit daft if you know what drive controller you
have.
Don't forget that some products don't wipe any Host Protected Area. !!
You don't have to pay. DBAN is free and open source.
