[3] Installation
----------------
This section describes how to install SBox into an encrypted, hidden
partiotion on your hardrive. External hard drive is recommended, but
SBox can be installed on a internal drive too. The size of the
partition depends on how much files you will store there, minimal
required size is 4GB. If you don't have a free partition you may
consider obtaining a hard drive management application, which will
allow you to shrink your existing partition, and create a new one.
Note: Instead of a partition, Sbox can be also installed into a virtual
encrypted drive created by TrueCrypt as a disk file.
3.1 Download SBox, VMware, and TrueCrypt:
-----------------------------------------
- If you don't already have a torrent client download "uTorrent" (free)
from http://www.utorrent.com. Install, and configure the application.
You will probably need to configure your router to redirect the port
used by uTorrent.
- Using your browser download the VMware torrent file.
Currently the URL is http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3976999/
VMware_Workstation_v6.0.2_ACE_Edition_Build_59824_with_KeyGen.
If this URL is invalid at the time you read this, search the site for
"VMware Workstation", version 6 or higher.
- Using your browser download the SBox torrent file. Please search the
http://thepiratebay.org site for "SBox", version 1.2 or higher.
- Import both torrents into uTorrent and start downloading. Sbox has
been uploaded on 02/21/2008; the download could be slow until there
are more seeders.
- While VMware and SBox are being downloaded, download TrueCrypt (free)
from http://www.truecrypt.org, and install the application.
3.2 Create encrypted TrueCrypt volume:
--------------------------------------
We will create two volumes. The first "outter" volume will contain a
second "hidden" one. The containers *must* have different passwords.
SBox is installed into the inner, hidden volume. Depending on which
password you use for mounting, TrueCrypt will mount either the "outter",
or the "inner" volume as a new drive. If you are ever forced to reveal
your password you can use the password to the "outter" volume, keeping
the Sbox installation hidden. For more info please see the TryeCrypt
manual.
- Using the application's "Volume Creation Wizard" select the option
"Create a volume within a non-system partition/device", and on
the next screen select "Standard TrueCrypt volume".
- On the "Volume Location" page select the partition you want to use for
SBox. Make sure you select the correct partition, all existing data on
this partition will be detroyed.
- On the "Encryption Options" and "Volume Size" pages just click Next.
- On the next page "Volume Password" enter a password. Note, this is the
password to the "outter" volume, don't use any of your secret passwords,
use something new, easy to remeber.
- On the "Volume Format" select Filesystem FAT. Don't check the "Quick
Format" option! Click Format.
After format is complete you will be returned to the first page of the
Wizard. We will now create the inner "hidden" volume:
- As previously select "Create a volume within a non-system partition/device",
but on the next screen "Volume Type" select the "Hidden TrueCrypt" volume.
- On the next page "Volume Creation Mode" select "Direct mode"
- On the next page "Volume Location" select the same device you specified
above when creating the "outter" container.
- On the next page "Outter Volume Password" enter the password you have
choosen above
- Click Next on the "Hidden Volume Encryption Options"
- On the "Hidden Volume Size" specify the size of the "inner" volume.
Make sure you leave at least 10% for the outter volume, for example
if your partition size is shown as 112061.72 MB (about 109 GB) use
only 100000 MB (about 98 GB) leaving 12061 MB (about 11 GB) free in
the "outter" volume.
- On the next page "Hidden Volume Password" enter a password. Note, this
is the password to the "hidden" volume, the password you will never
reveal.
- On the "Hidden Volume Format" select Filesystem NTFS (default), and
click Format, and wait until it finishes.
We are done, you can exit the wizzard. Try mounting the new volume. In the
TrueCrypt main window click on a drive letter (e.g.: Z), then using the
'Select Device..." button select the partition you used above. Click
'Mount' and eneter your "outter" volume password. Check in the Explorer
if you can access the new drive. Now click 'Dismount' and repeat mounting
using your "hidden" volume password.
Assuming uTorrent finished downloading VMware and SBox. Please keep seeding
the application even after you finished installation; If possible, seed
until your ratio (shown in uTorrent) is 1.0 or more, so others would be
able to download too.
3.3 Install VMware Workstation:
-------------------------------
Just run the VMware installer, with no changes to defaults. The application
will be installed into "Program Files" folder (XP). Don't install into
TrueCrypt volume you just created. Generate a key with the keygen included
in the package you downloaded, and register the program.
3.4 Install SBox:
-----------------
Start TrueCrypt and mount the volume you have created as a drive Z. Mount
using your password to the *hidden* volume. Unrar the downloaded SBox
archive into Z: You should see there a single folder SBox-1.2.
[4] Start the SBox virtual PC:
------------------------------
Start VMware Workstation (not the Player), and using File->Open open the
file Z:\SBox-1.2\sbox.vmdk, then click the "Start this virtual machine".
SBox will load and you can start using it.
The SBox applications have been selected, and configured to provide some
level of anonymity and security when communicating via Internet. In
addition, becuase you are using a virtual PC, no information is stored
on you "real" PC in any form (temp files, registry entries, logs, etc).
Anonymoity is provided by the application TOR - you should use Firefox
for Web browsing, IE 7 is there only to perform Windows Updates. Both
Firefox, and the Thunderbid email client are configure to use TOR - this
will impact your connection speed, but it is the price we pay for anonimity.
The Agent newsreader can be used for anonymous news access - it also uses
the TOR proxy. You will need a news provider for full access to Usenet,
the default configuration is for access to a free "text-only" provider.
PGP version 6.5.8 has been included to allow for secure, private email
exchange. See the included help file on usage, in the case you are not
familiar with PGP.
The torrent client uTorrent is included too. Make sure that PeerGuardian
is running before you use it. PeerGuardian blocks black-listed (government,
spammers, etc) IPs from accessing your machine. You will also need to
forward the virtual NAT port (in addition to forwarding on your router).
Please see the VMware documentation.
Note: SBox performance depends on how much is your filesystem fragmented.
Run the included O&O Defrag application before you exit the virtual PC.
By default, SBox is configured to use 512 MB RAM, If you have 1 GB, this
should be ok. If you have less, decrease the amount.
Inside SBox, you will see two (virtual) hard drives "C" and "D". "C" has
capacity 10 GB, which should be enough for all your programs you may
install, "D" has capacity 80 GB, and it can be used to store downloaded
files. Note, that the actual space for these virtual drives is allocated
by VMware gradually, and the total of 90 GB will be allocated only
if you created the "hidden" TrueCrypt volume with 90 GB or more space.
When you done, just "Turn off Computer" in the virtual PC, as you would on
a real one, exit VMware, and dismount the TrueCrypt volume.
[5] Wrapping up:
----------------
Optionaly you can mount the TrueCrypt volume with your "outter" volume
password, and place some files there - these would provide justification
(in case you need) to have TrueCrypt installed on your system.
Note, you must not place more files into the outter volume as the space
you left free when we created the hidden volume (11 GB in our example).
TrueCrypt will not prevent you from overwriting the hidden volume.
[6] Support:
------------
Please post your comments, suggestions, corrections... to the news group
alt.privacy, use "SBox" in the subject. We will keep updating SBox as long
as there is a community interessted in using the package.
[7] Credits:
------------
We would like to thanks to all TPB uploaders who contributed the applications
included in this packages.
