Re: Proxies that work with FTP and Tor?

Hi,

I want to connect to a FTP site through Tor although, as mentioned,
Privoxy does not work with FTP.

Therefore, can anyone recommend a free proxy that works with Tor so one
can just use something like "forward-socks4a / localhost:9050 ." with
the new proxy?

Tor works just fine with FTP all by itself. Privoxy's main purpose is to
filter all the header trash and keep track of things like malicious
scripts, banner, web bugs, cookies, etc. None of those things is really a
factor for standard FTP.

What browser are you using? There should be individual settings for which
proxy to use for different protocols... HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, Gopher, and
maybe even SOCKS depending on the browser (Tor is a SOCKS proxy by the
way).

Different browsers can be configured differently, but in *general* you
probably want to go ahead and set everything but HTTP to localhost:9050
so it uses Tor directly. Even HTTPS because Privoxy can't filter anything
in an encrypted stream anyway. HTTP should be set to localhost:8118 to
take advantage of Privoxy's housecleaning capabilities.

If you're using something like Forefox though, you may not even need
Privoxy. With a couple addons like TorButton and NoScript you get better
protection than Privoxy offers.

There's also a Privoxy-like proxy out there called Polipo that I
*believe* will relay FTP traffic as well as HTTP(s). Have to check that
though, if you want to replace Privoxy all together with another proxy.
It doesn't filter like Privoxy does, but it does cache.

Lots of choices IOW. :) Maybe if you were a little more specific about
exactly what browser and operating system you're running you could get
amore specific answer.
