It seems to me to be a lot easier than the ones calling themselves
privacy services (and even anonymity services sometimes). It's a simple
VPN. No need to configure mail clients or anything, just use your comp
as usual. Is there any real difference from a privacy perspective
between this and, those services I don't want to name here because it
might cause a storm of unrelated abuse?
They don't make any ridiculous claims and pretty much just say what the
service is.

How so?
PPTP is an Internet protocol that encompasses a wide range of
encryption and authentication methods. Microsoft's implementation might
be full of holes just like most of their crap, but there's nothing at
all wrong with PPTP itself and you don't HAVE to use Microsoft's broken
implementation.
