Somewhere, and DAMNED if I can find it now, there are some plans out on
the web for a little hand held device that will scramble RFID tags without
harming anything else. Made from a disposable camera flash unit and a
couple batteries I believe, and stuffed back into the camera just to look
"normal". Hold it within a couple inches of the tag, take the "picture",
and the tag is rendered a useless.

Apparently the zappers just discharges the HV cap into a coil held
close to the antenna coil in the RFID.
Great post. Thank you for the detector circuit it looks too easy to
build.
Detector and Destructor - all one needs to meet the new RFID
challenges to our privacy.
How about transmitters to use as jammers rendering a whole Walmart
inoperable. Doubtless Congress will step in (in the US) and modify
the Digital Millennium Copywrite Act to include RFID detectors,
destructors, and jammers.
Looks like the UN is getting involved in trying to impose its own
(corporate sponsored) copywrite laws on the world in one go.
