Re: Beware of "PowerPrivacy.com"

***UPDATE March 19, 2006***

The owners of powerprivacy.com sent me an email and arranged for me to
take a peek at their community. I must say, I am impressed with what they
are trying to do. First of all, they addressed all points that I brought
up in my first post.

And their answers were....?

I doubt many people would even spend the $10 for the trial membership.
Considering the price of a real account, It's not likely anyone would
subscribe without more than HTML promises and an endorsement from a
proxied poster.

As for the site, it has A LOT of very useful
information.

Such as? I'm sure you could relate some of it without giving away "trade
secrets". Is this just a collection of information that can be found
elsewhere? Do you have any examples of the new, innovative content
they're saying paid members have access to?

Frankly, I wasn't expecting much, but it far exceeded my
expectations. The "articles" section is chock full of solid
privacy/anonymity information.

What sort of information? Well written snake oil is less useful that
poorly written fact. What are your qualifications for making the
determination? Are you simply being duped by smooth talk, or do you have
the sort of extensive knowledge that makes you a believable authority?

The forums have some good people
participating - just not enough right now.

At the price I'm not at all surprised. :(

What sort of "good people" are participating? Anyone recognizable? What's
some their sage advice, and how credible is it?

My guess is that it will be
tweaked and will be a solid community for privacy advocates. Clearly,

Not at the price they're charging, when there's a considerable number of
communities one can join for nothing.

powerprivacy.com is a good faith effort to bring a sense of community to
those of us who value our privacy. Good luck to Power Privacy!!

That may be true. But e have no way of knowing that and few if any people
will be willing to risk the sort of money they're talking about just to
find out. And to be brutally honest, someone saying "they're great" has
exactly as much value as the moron who said they're an FBI front. None at
all. Without some sort of evidence one way or the other both claims smell
the same. Sorry, but that's not a personal attack or an attack against
them, it's just the way things are.
