Help google-analytics

On a couple of websites i visit, e.g.

www.overclock.net/archive/f-70.html and
www.novatech.co.uk

Firefox momentarily says that it is "waiting for"

www.google-analytics.com

I've blocked it (at least i thought I had) in HOSTS but it still appears. What is google-analytics.com and how can i stop it accessing my browser? TIA!
