Is Tor still credible?



When I read the FAQ ([1]) some time ago, the Tor team stated that
there is no backdoor in Tor, but warned that in the case that they
would be forced to put one in it, they would probably not be allowed
to tell that. In the meantime, that statement has been removed, and
the mentioned case has even been ruled out. Maybe exactly what they
warned about is now the case, and they were forced to secretly put a
backdoor in the code. Has anyone watched the source code changes since
then? Should we all downgrade?
