With Excuses All Gone, You’ve Been Paying Too Much for Food

Most Americans probably felt the sting at the grocery store long
before they read or saw any news stories involving rising food prices.
Fast-growing pain, felt by many only at the gas pump, had spread to
grocery store aisles, squeezing American family budgets.

The excuse – a façade built by the food industry – wasn’t especially
elaborate; it was quite straightforward and even seemed to involve
some sort of logic. Then the excuse vanished, and it became all too
clear that the food companies spending considerable time and money
advancing that message were selling an empty package.

You were paying more for your groceries, the food companies’ story
went, in no small part because of the rising cost of commodities such
as corn, soybeans and wheat. And, the driving force behind increased
costs for these commodities was increased demand resulting from the
higher production of biofuels, which they claimed was diverting those
same grains as a feedstock for fuel.

Plausible, right?

Well, something interesting has happened on the way to the grocery
store check-out line.

The prices of corn, wheat and soybeans have dropped dramatically –
about 50 percent from their prices in the spring of this year. In
fact, when adjusted for inflation, the price of soybeans is at its
lowest level since the Great Depression. Soybean oil is used as a
feedstock by many biodiesel producers.

So did the price of the grain commodities fall because of decreased
biofuels production?

No, in fact biodiesel production has already increased by more than
100 million gallons compared to last year. Congress in recent months
has taken extraordinary steps to encourage higher production of
homegrown biofuels, recognizing their value to energy security, as
well as their proven environmental benefits.

It is absurd for the food companies to continue to fleece the American
people with an argument that has no logical basis. With the cost of
agriculture commodities halved, the prices of your groceries haven’t
budged. Not five percent, not 10 and certainly not 50.

As the National Biodiesel Board gathers in St. Louis this week for its
board meeting of more than 100 biodiesel producers and farmers from
across the nation, we would like to know, and believe you deserve to
know, exactly who is keeping that profit?

The National Farmers Union recently reported that despite a drop in
the price of a bushel of wheat from $19 to $7.63 since February, the
cost of a loaf of bread has inexplicably increased over that same
period. And the farmer’s share of that $2.99 loaf of bread?

About 12 cents.

Meanwhile, the average American has been forced to chip in to help
Kraft Foods more than double its profits by posting net earnings of
$1.4 billion in the third quarter of this year. What about that cereal
you had this morning? Kellogg’s announced third-quarter earnings rose
12% to $342 million.

Besides Big Oil, can you name one other industry with such profits in
the current
economic malaise?

It is clear today that the multi-million dollar public relations
campaign financed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) to
relentlessly drive the “food vs. fuel” farce was a smokescreen to
divert our attention from the profits of the food companies.

Biofuels, not yet fully understood by all Americans, was an easy
scapegoat.
The fact that the National Biodiesel Board is based in Jefferson City,
Mo., underscores that Missouri is a leader in renewable fuels, and
Missourians should know the truth about just how little biofuels such
as biodiesel impact the price of food in the U.S.

In 2007, environmentally friendly biodiesel displaced more than 20
million barrels of petroleum in America, while the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) estimates that less than one percent of food price
inflation could be attributed to biofuels production.

Additionally, the U.S biodiesel industry contributed $4.1 billion to
America’s GDP as well as created over 21,000 new “green” jobs.

In the aftermath of natural disasters such as hurricanes, companies
engaged in price gouging find themselves on the wrong side of
consumers and the law. With the current economic crisis, and the
façade of the food industry’s excuse ripped away to expose an unseemly
truth, perhaps the multinational food companies and the GMA will
choose to avoid the appearance of price gouging.

Gouging is a serious charge to be sure. However, the immediate actions
of the food companies will provide the clearest answer as to whether
the charge rings true. Their actions will also answer another question
important to tens of millions of Americans.

What’s more important, the bottom line of consumers or the food
industry’s billions in profits?

No more excuses.
