G-8 Protestors Clash With Police in Tokyo

Sunday, June 29, 2008

TOKYO -- Protesters clashed with police in Tokyo Sunday during
demonstrations against an upcoming summit of leaders from the Group of
Eight industrialized nations.

More than 1,000 people were involved in two rallies and several were
arrested, local media reported. At one demonstration in the downtown
Tokyo shopping district of Shibuya, at least one man was dragged away
after clashing with police in riot gear.

Police said they couldn't immediately comment.

The demonstrations took place about a week before the G-8 leadership
summit to be held July 7-9 on the northern Japanese island of
Hokkaido.

The country has tightened security ahead of the summit, which will
feature leaders from the U.S., Japan, Germany, Britain, France,
Russia, Italy and Canada.
