Voices of the Bitter #1

Caroline From Nevada:

I live in Nevada. Right now we are number one in foreclosures and
because of the desperate situation in the housing market I was not
able to sell my home to downsize and lower my expenses now that I am a
widow. I am lucky that we purchased our home seven years ago so that
at least, for the moment, there is still some equity there. I was
born in West Virginia and spent my adult life in Ohio. Both of these
states have been devastated by the present and past economic policies
and the loss of industrial jobs. In Cleveland, where I spent most of
my time, the closing of the steel mills and auto plants has had a
devastating effect. Remember the headlines when Cleveland was named
the number one city for poverty for children in America. Similarly,
West Virginia has had many of the same losses in the steel and coal
industries. You better believe folks are bitter. Many are depressed
and even though they want to get out, don't see a way. Then again,
why should they? Why should folks have to leave their home towns
where all their family live and all their memories are? Do folks
think that government has abandoned them? You'd better believe it!
Now I'll give you two more personal examples of what makes me
"bitter." I just retired from a credit union. Every time I had to
call Check Systems to verify an account, the call went to a call
center in a foreign country. What, they couldn't find anyone here in
America who needs a job? Every summer, hundreds of students from
various countries "join" our credit union, work for the summer, send
the bulk of their money back home, and then return home. With so many
kids here needing jobs and again, Cleveland being number one for
unemployment among black youth, you see where I'm coming from. I
don't blame immigrants for our problems, (these aren't immigrants,
they don't move here permanently, they are foreign students who come
to Vegas for summer jobs.) but you can see how this could make one
bitter. Add this to the fact that I was unable to find a toy for my
grandson this Christmas that was not made in China. I could go on.
Now comes a candidate who not only speaks the truth but offers us hope
for real solutions to our problems and I can't help but support him.
Just because folks are bitter it doesn't mean they have given up
hope. Just the opposite is true. Senator Barack Obama who gives us
hope because he is the only candidate who can solve our problems and
end the bitterness because he is the only one who recognizes that the
problems do exist and he knows how to solve them.

From Minich:

You're damned right I'm bitter. I don't like the idea of doubling the
national debt under Shrub. I don't like paying $4 a gallon for
gasoline when the government does nothing to get the next generation
of vehicles into production. I don't like giving away hundreds of
trillions in corporate welfare when we can't educate, feed or take
care of children. I am bitter about the idea that this is the only
industrialized country without single payer, universal health care. I
am more than upset that Republicans in this Congress have blocked
every attempt to end the collosal blunder of invading Iraq. I am
really upset that George Bush monitors all my communications, that I
can't get on an airplane without taking off my shoes, that Grover
Norquist and his ilk have been raiding the federal Treasury while
working to bankrupt the country. And, I am incensed that Norquist,
Cheney, Scooter Libby and Bill Kristol are not in striped suits,
building roads with picks and shovels. I am incensed that George Bush
will not be arrested and sent to the Hague to be found guilty of war
crimes when his "term" in office is over. .... Bitter? Damned right,
I'm BITTER.
