Bandit arrested at San Leandro hospital

OAKLAND _ A man trying to rob a north Oakland gas sation at gunpoint this morning was shot in the face by a clerk, police said. The suspect was later arrested after he was left in the parking lot of a San Leandro hospital.

The incident happened at 7:25 a.m. at a gas station n the 5500 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.

Oakland Police Lt. Lawrence Green said the gunman entered the part of the gas station where food is sold, pointed a gun a clerk and demanded money.

A second clerk, who was in the back of the store, came out and shot the suspect in the face, Green said.

The suspect fled ñ and based on a trail of blood found at the scene ñ he made it to a getaway car a block away. He was left about 15 minutes later at San Leandro Hospital, 13855 E 14th St.

He was arrested at the hospital, but was later transferred to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley. He is expected to recover. The suspect was not immediately identified by police.
