There are around 300,000,000 Americans. A few violent crimes do not
make "a reality" for any given person. Are you really this ignorant of
statistical thinking, or are you scared of everything you read in the
newspaper? What a way to "live"...

Are the dead supposed to feel better about being dead because their
chances of becoming dead were relatively small?
Besides, more than probability is important. We have to consider risk,
the product of probability and severity of injury. While the probability
may have been small, the severity of possible injury was great. That
means big risk.
