...in Bozeman, Montana, awaiting their flights. One is an American
Indian
passing through from
Lame Deer. Another is a Cowboy on his way to Billings for a
livestock
show and the third
passenger is a fundamentalist Arab student, newly arrived at
Montana
State University from the Middle
East. Their discussion drifts to their diverse cultures.
Soon, the two Westerners learn that the Arab is a devout, radical
Muslim
and the conversation falls into an uneasy lull. The wind outside
is
blowing tumbleweeds
around and the old windsock is flapping; but still no plane comes.
The
cowboy leans back in his
chair, crosses his boots on a magazine table and tips his big
sweat-stained hat forward over his
face.
Finally, the American Indian clears his throat and softly he
speaks,
"At
one time here, my people were many, but sadly, now we are few."
The Muslim student raises an eyebrow and leans forward, "Once my
people
were few," he sneers, "and now we are many. Why do you suppose
that
is?"
The Montana cowboy shifts his toothpick to one side of his mouth
and
from the darkness beneath his Stetson says in a drawl, "That's
'cause
we
ain't played Cowboys and
Muslims yet, but I do believe it's a-comin."
And another rightwinger amazes us with his brilliance.
Another liberal resorts to insults instead of cogent argument.
"Cogent Argument"!?!?!?!
You post a "joke" making light of a previous scar on our society where
we did to a group of humans what the Germans attempted to do to the
Jews and that goes on to boast and threaten that we are about to do it
again, and you want to claim that you started off reasonable or
convincing? Please, spare us a little here, my firewall crap detector
is wearing out.
You compare the American Indian wars to the Holocaust? You need to
study
your history a little more.
I have, please explain how the elimination of entire tribes of Indians
is any different than the elimination of an entire tribe of religous
followers.
Compare and contrast:
Indian Wars describes a series of conflicts between the United States and
Native American peoples ("Indians") of North America. The Wars
collectively resulted in the conquest of American Indian peoples and their
decimation, assimilation, or forced relocation to Indian reservations.
More than 40 Indian wars from 1775 to 1890 reportedly claimed the lives of
some 45,000 Indians and 19,000 whites. To see the Indian wars as a racial
war between Indians and "whites" simplifies the complex historical reality
of the struggle. Indians and whites often fought alongside each other;
Indians often fought against Indians.

The Holocaust is the name applied to the state-led systematic persecution
and genocide of the Jews and other minority groups of Europe and North
Africa during World War II by Nazi Germany and its collaborators.

The "Indian Wars" were the result of Europeans invading and conquering
people who lived in North America, who had their own societies and cultures.
They were forced to move off their land into ever smaller and smaller
"reservations" and those who did not move were slaughtered. When we study
how Genghis Khan and the Mongols invaded Europe, we call it an invasion and
we look upon the Mongols as wicked invaders. But when we study how the
Europeans invaded North America and brutally conquered the native people, we
dismiss it as "Indian Wars" -- as though the "Indians" started the wars.
Bull***.
