Experts say U.S. losing war on terror
WASHINGTON (UPI) --
More than 80 percent of the top 100 U.S. foreign-policy experts of
both parties believe the country is not winning the war on terror,
according to a survey.
The poll found "a striking consensus across political party lines,"
according to a statement Wednesday from the two centrist -- but
liberal-leaning -- think tanks that conducted it, the Center for
American Progress and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's
Foreign Policy magazine.
The survey polled 116 experts, divided into three categories --
liberal, moderate and conservative -- and weighted the results to
compensate for the slightly larger number of liberals in the sample.
Eighty-four percent of the weighted sample -- including 71 percent of
the conservatives -- disagreed somewhat or strongly with President
Bush's assertion that the United States was winning the war on terror.
More than 8 out of 10 believed that another attack on the scale of the
Sept. 11 suicide hijackings was likely or certain within the next 10
years.
An even higher proportion -- 91 percent of the weighted sample --
believed that a smaller-scale attack like the July 7, 2005, London
transit bombings would occur in the next 10 years, with more than half
warning that such an attack could come as soon as this year.
The experts were savagely critical of the performance of the U.S.
agencies and departments charged with safeguarding the country.
Rating agencies for their effectiveness on a scale of one to 10, only
the National Security Agency scored more than a five.
The Department of Homeland Security scored 2.9 -- the lowest of any
agency.
Making the case that terrorism is a threat, makes terrorism
MORE likely since this is their GOAL. The war on terror
is the most completely counter-productive idea in the fight
against terrorism!@#! Like we need to be told that terrorism
are a threat, we know they are. Shutup! get on with stopping
the terrorists and don't whatever you do GIVE the terrorist
their 9-11 day over and over and over again.
