"Guy" spouted:
- We need to get rid of those workers to protect the bottom line.
This is usually the last ditch effort to shore up profits of a dying
business. If it is due to loss of business (usually) then it is
probably necessary. If it due stingy management and creates too much
work for existing employees, it is up to them to voice their
disagreements.
You DO realize, don't you, that a business's goal is to make money,
right? It's not to give you a job. Your job is incidental to
profits. If you help the business achieve profits, then you have a
job. If you don't, you don't.
- We can't afford to pay workers what they are worth -- bad for profits,
don'ca know
The Market sets what the workers is worth. I get good pay due to the
effort I put into my education and training and proven track record of
being an excellent, dependable worker. If you are 40 years old and
your only job skill is flipping burgers at Mickey D's, then you are
worth exactly (in job terms) what a 15 year old with no work experience
is worth (minimum wage).
- Raising the minimum wage will cause unemployment
Yes, and increase costs. Employees are a raw material. If it costs X
amount of money produce a product and you tack on Y amount of profits,
then the cost to the consumer is X+Y Double the cost of X (2X) then
the business has one of two choices. Increase the cost to the consumer
to 2X+Y, or, half the cost of producing said product (halfing X i.e.
find cheaper raw materials. i.e. lay off people).
Sure you can dictate that burger flippers will make $18 an hour. Then
the price of a Happy Meal will increase to $22. In order to afford
this all working wages will have to be increased. Soon prices on all
commodities will increase, and you will be bitching that "Burger
flippers are only making $18 an hour, that is not a 'living
wage'"
Workers tend to be paid based on their job skills and performance...in
other words..'what they are worth'.
- Taxing me is stealing my money
I've never said this. I just think that taxes should be FAIR across
the board (flat tax?) and the taxes taken should not be spent on pork,
wasted on useless programs that foster generations on welfare or in
trying to make sure that Katrina 'victims' fell good about
themselves. I have no problem with taxes, as they are necessary to the
infrastructure of a country, but I have a big problem with the
'redistribution of wealth' tax system we have right now. The
system we have now penalizes the most productive people of our society
while pandering to the least productive. And in the process, some of
the truly needy, who these programs were designed to help, get left on
the sideline as there is nothing left after the con-artists have
screwed the system. If you are an honest, hardworking individual who
happens upon hard times, it is VERY difficult to find the assistance
you need. BUT, if you a perfecty able bodied individual who has been
raised to expect 'gov'ment money' and who knows how to screw the
system, it's a fucking cornicopia (it helps if you're an 'oppressed
minority', also).
