I'm confused about flags

A few days ago, in several US cities, Hispanics demonstrated
for/against/about immigration legislation. Some demonstrators carried
Mexican flags. I recall seeing one news report in which the reporter asked
a young fellow -- who said he was a US citizen -- why he was carrying a
Mexican flag. He said he was carrying the flag to demonstrate his Mexican
heritage.

The rightwankers on this NG have been throwing consecutive hissy fits over
the fact that some demonstrators carried the Mexican flag and some have even
said we should ban such displays.

However, lots of folks around where I live display the Confederate flag --
the flag of a nation that declared war on the USofA -- they say they fly the
Confederate flag to show their "southern heritage."

If we ban displays of the Mexican flag, why don't we ban displays of the
Confederate flag? After all, neither of them is the US flag.

I'm confused.

Maybe a couple of fingers of Wild Turkey will clear up things.
