Sen. Clinton Urges Democrats to Speak Up

WASHINGTON

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday accused Republicans of
"playing the fear card" of terrorism to win elections

[It's not "playing the fear card" to warn about terrorism. Terrorism
is a real and present danger to Americans, and the situation we find
ourselves in needs to be discussed. Conservatives are more than
willing to discuss the problem and solutions, because they understand
both the problem and the solution, but liberals want to pretend there
is no great danger facing us, and to excuse their lack of any
discernable position on the terrorism problem or solution. They
pretend that conservatives are distorting reality and unnecessarily
scaring people to get votes. The liberals cannot compete with
conservatives on these national defense issues because they fear
confrontations with those who would do our country physical harm,
which makes them utterly unsuited for the job. The only type of
confrontation the liberals are good at is attacking their political
opponents. In this, they are fearless, with no quarter given. But
when it comes to confronting America's enemies, they are completely
worthless, even dangerous, since they delude themselves about the
danger in order to avoid any such confrontation.].

and said Democrats cannot keep quiet if they want to win in November.

[The Democrats have not been quiet. In fact, they have been quite
vocal. The problem is their rhetoric is either directed at creating a
false reality directed at downplaying, in their minds and the minds of
the general public, any danger the U.S. faces; or is directed into
personal attacks and smears against their political opponents, neither
of which makes the U.S. safer. Instead, it makes the world a more
dangerous place because their lack of backbone emboldens fanatics and
dictators by demonstrating their inability to take action against
America's enemies, and by hampering and undermining the conservatives
who *are* willing to take the actions necessary to defend America.]

The New York Democrat, facing re-election this year and considered a
potential White House candidate in 2008, said Republicans won the past
two elections on the issue of national security and "they're doing it
to us again."

[The liberals are doing *it* to themselves. There is no more
important issue than our national security, and it is obvious to
anyone concerned that the liberals are not up to this job. We cannot
depend on liberals to defend us, because they just won't do it.
Instead, they will pretend there is no danger; or pretend our enemies
are just misunderstood, regular guys who can be reasoned with, going
so far as to indentify with our enemies, like a captive sometimes
identifies with his captor (Stockholm syndrome), and making the U.S.
and/or conservative politicians out to be the real cause of the
problem, not the poor, misunderstodd fanatics and dictators of the
world. This is their way of avoiding confrontation with our
enemies.].

She said a speech by presidential adviser Karl Rove two weeks ago
showed the GOP election message is: "All we've got is fear and we're
going to keep playing the fear card."

[Of course, that's not what Rove said. Rather, it is "less than
truthfull's" mischaracterization of it.]

In that speech, Rove suggested Republicans can prevail in 2006 by
showing Democrats had undermined terrorism-fighting efforts by
questioning Bush's authority to allow wiretapping without getting
court approval first.

[Among a hundred other things the liberals have done to undermine
both the war on terror and the President of the United States.]

Clinton said a convention of United Auto Workers that Democrats should
not be afraid to question Bush's handling of the war.

[Liberals don't have a problem questioning the war or President
Bush's actions. They do it loudly and continuously. The problem they
have is they do not like it when their rhetoric is seen to be purely
partisan political blather which directly undermines the war against
our enemies. When this is pointed out to them, they whine that their
patriotism is being questioned. It's not their patriotism that is
being questioned (for the most part), it is their grasp of reality and
their judgement that is in question.]

"I take a back seat to nobody when it comes to fighting terrorism and
standing up for national homeland security," she said.

[Your husband was a disaster for U.S. national security. I suspect
you would be just as big a disaster. Both of you put politics above
national security. It's in your nature.]

Referring to fugitive al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, Clinton said,
"You cannot explain to me why we have not captured or killed the
tallest man in Afghanistan."

[The Olympic bomber, Eric Rudolph avoided capture for five years,
and he was right here in the United States, and never left the county
he was hiding out in. It's not as easy to find one person as you
apparently think. Osama may be in Afghanistan, but he could be in
Pakistan or even Iran. Places where American troops can not yet go.
It's easy to criticize President Bush for this, but I doubt you would
do any better, were you in charge. Your criticism is just a cheap
political shot, which you would no doubt be enraged about were it
directed at you.]

She added, "Since when has it been part of American patriotism to keep
our mouths shut?"

[Since when have you or any of the other liberals kept their mouths
shut? You guys are saying plenty, it's just that what you are saying
is not getting any traction with the American people. You are heavy
on the rhetoric but you have no plan of action to defend this
country.]

White House spokesman Ken Lisaius responded: "It sounds like from
reports that the political season is certainly starting early for
some."

[It never ends for some.]

President Bush, he said, wants to address rising health costs, energy
costs and the war in Iraq in a bipartisan way "and keep the political
bomb-throwing to a minimum."

[It takes two to tango, George. You can be as reasonable as is
possible but it won't change the ugly political climate we have today
when you are dealing with partisan, unreasonable liberals. But keep
at it, George. I think most people can see who wants to get along and
who does not. This will be to your advantage in the long run.]

end excerpt

For the information of those who do not know, I refer to Hillary
Clinton as "less than truthful" to remind people that the New York
Times referred to her this way right before they endorsed Hillary for
the New York Senate seat (in the very same op-ed). I think it is
telling that the New York Times felt comfortable endosing a proven
liar for the U.S. Senate. Their standards are not very high. Of
course, they never are when it comes to liberals or the truth. "Birds
of a feather flock together", as they say. Endorsing a liar validates
their own lying, I guess.
