Mexico asks neighbors' help to halt US fence plan

ReutersReuters

Dec 29, 2005 ? MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's foreign minister will
meet with counterparts in Central America to seek their backing
against a U.S. plan to build a high-tech border fence aimed at holding
back illegal immigrants.

Mexicans are incensed by the proposal in the U.S. Congress to erect
the fence with lights and security cameras along parts of the border
and make illegal immigration a felony.

The meeting with Central American leaders, whose nations also send
many undocumented workers to the United States, is Mexico's latest
move to block the U.S. proposal, which the government of President
Vicente Fox has called "disgraceful" and a violation of human rights.

end excerpt

People from other countries do not have an inherent right to
illegally enter another country, Vincente.

Mexico does not welcome illegal border crossers with open arms. If
I were caught illegally entering Mexico, you would treat me like a
criminal. Yet you expect illegal immigrants entering the United
States to be treated as guests. You require us to do things you would
not do yourself, and if we don't, then you claim it is a violation of
human rights.

Your interest in allowing millions of illegal immigrants into the
U.S. is all about the money. If Mexican citizens can get into the
U.S., then they can send money back to Mexico, which raises Mexico's
standard of living and allows politicians like Fox to let Mexico's
economy stagnate and depend on illegal immigrants to make up the
difference.

The U.S., on the other hand, wants to regulate who comes and goes to
this country as a matter of national security and national
sovereignty. Mexico and others' economies take a back seat to U.S.
national security, and whining by Fox and others does not change these
facts.

We are going to protect ourselves, and if that means Fox has to work
a little harder to satisfy his countrymens' economic expectations,
then so be it. Your U.S. "gravy train" is about to come to an end.
