Yeah, I've long believed that we should have been using our forces and
influence in places like Indonesia and Pakistan (where Al Qaeda
fanaticism dominates) rather than bogging them down in a war against a
secular (though murderous) government in Iraq. I never understood why
we wasted the bulk of our forces there, when the war was on Islamic
terror.

What has resulted is an emboldening of the fanatics worldwide by our
allowing Usama Bin Laden to Survive, and emboldening of the fanatics in
Iran to take control from the moderates who were dominating before we
invaded Iraq. We even created a great future friend for fanatical Shii
Iran by helping Shiis gain control in Iraq.

Imagine if, instead of going into Iraq, we had deployed our forces in
greater strength at the Afghanistan/Pakistan border and put massive
special operations forces to work in the jungles of Indonesia and the
Phillipines, forcing the governments of all Pakistan and Indonesia to
cooperate (The Philippines government would have eagerly embraced the
idea). Also imagine if we had really cracked down on the Saudi funders
of religious fanaticism, rather than cater to them with regular
invitations to the White House and the Crawford Ranch.

Instead, we let *** Cheney mislead us down a road that has resulted in
in a strengthening, not a weakening of Inslamic Fanaticism worldwide.

Seeing those young girls decapitated sure does piss me off and make me
wish we had taken a more effective route. Unfortunately, they are a
horrible reminder of our blundering policy.
