No, are you?

The Internet Free Speech Study Center also is keeing a close eye on
Dave Touretzky.

CMU's "FREE SPEECH" PROFESSOR CENSORS INTERNET SITES
Added: (Mon Aug 29 2005)

When a perfectly legal web site is removed from the worldwide web for
no
other reason than someone didn't like what its author had to say, the
last
person you would suspect to have engineered this subversion of free
speech
is a university professor.

Carnegie Mellon's David Touretzky who, while claiming to be a "free
speech
activist," appears to be on a low profile campaign to shut down
websites
that expose some of his nastier hobbies.

Over the past few years Barbara Schwarz of Utah has attempted to
publish
racist statements made by Touretzky only to watch helplessly as each of
her
websites was systematically shut down. Schwarz claims that Mr.
Touretzky
uses his position at CMU and threat of legal action to intimidate ISPs
into
removing her sites. Commenting on condition of anonymity, several of
these
ISPs confirmed Schwarz's claims.

"Touretzky has never threatened to sue me for what I have made
available on
the web. Instead he goes behind my back and lies to ISPs and threatens
them
with a law suit," Schwarz states on her website. "Why do you think he
never
sued me? Because he knows I have the documentation to prove what I
write in
my website. He knows that in discovery I will subpoena his telephone
records, the places where he purchased his sex toys, using Carnegie
Mellon
facilities. Touretzky has consistently attacked my right to express my
opinion. He has censored my website many times and is trying to silence
me
for telling the truth about him. Touretzky claims to be a free speech
advocate, but not when someone is critical of him."

The website claims that Dr. Touretzky's other hobbies include using CMU
servers to mirror a site that offers detailed instructions how to build
a
homemade bomb, and his nightly forays into public chat rooms produce a
wealth of racist statements about minorities, such as this one about
African
Americans:

Touretzky statements are:

"The black underclass is a very, very sick culture, with terrible
internal
problems such as high rates of black-on-black murder, teenage
pregnancy,
educational failure, drug abuse, and so on. AA programs can't help the
black
underclass, because those people are so screwed up they're virtually
unemployable. ."

And this one about abortion:

"Hell, I'm for post-partum abortion! Retro-active abortion! Up until,
say,
the age of six months."

Of course, Touretzky defends his outrageous statements as exercising
his
right to free speech - a right he apparently doesn't extend to Schwarz,
leaving us to wonder how he expects to be taken seriously as one who
believes in the first amendment, let alone claims himself a defender.

Perhaps out of frustration, Schwarz's new website,
http://schwartz.narod.ru,
fires a salvo guaranteed to hit the hypocritical Touretzky where it
hurts.
It seems the researcher, whose experiments on rats are heavily
subsidized by
the U.S. government, made the mistake of purchasing sex toys from his
Carnegie Mellon office. The invoice is posted, along with some
humorously
explicit visual aids, but anyone interested had better hurry and take a
look
because, once CMU's "defender of free speech" sees it, it's not likely
to
last.
