One of his less than brilliant quotes. Jefferson was a Francophile
and a hater of England. Jefferson's speech regarding "the blood
tyrants" was in support of the bloody French Revolution.
Jefferson believed the United States should support the French
revolutionaries. Adams realised that the leaders of the French
Revolution, unlike the leaders of the American Revolution, were
bloodthirsty thugs and should be shunned.
Washington and Adams realised that interests change, and that
countries who are at one time our friends, like Great Britain in the
French and Indian War of 1756 to 1763, can become our enemies, as they
did in the American Revolution. Likewise enemies, like France in 1756
to 1763, can become our friends, as they did starting around 1777 to
1781. As Washington stated, people have friends, countries have
interests. There's no guarantee other countries will continue to have
the same goals as us, whence his speech against "entangling
alliances".- A. McIntire
