Safest And Least Safe Places in the U.S.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina's devastation, some
Americans--particularly Gulf Coast residents--may be wondering whether
there are places in the U.S. that are safe from such natural disasters.

The short answer? No. The Midwest may not be vulnerable to hurricanes, but twisters drop in regularly. Major earthquakes don't tend to strike New England, but strong winds can peel the roof off a northeastern house and snowstorms can shut down cities.

While I agree somewhat with the premise, there are a few things they should take into account they don't.

For instance, in 41 years in the upper midwest I can remember the National Guard being called out for 1 snow storm in my area (snowblitz of 1979, over 5 feet in a week).

While the area is tornado prone 2 of my 100 aunts, uncles, cousins and their spouses have had homes damaged in those 41 years. The guard did repond to this large twister (Wautoma, Wi, August 1992), but it was a few local units, not 30,000 from around the country.

In the last year how many folks in Pensacola have been hit 3 or 4 times by hurricanes? Some folks haven't rebuilt from last year and were hit twice this year.

So yes, in the upper midwest snow and tornados can be quite the problem, but it's one dealt with for the most part on a local level, not requiring national assistance.
