Send convicts to Alaska rather than incarcerate them

Instead of putting more and more Americans in jail, we could send the non-violent ones to Alaska to have them build Sarah Palin's natural gas pipeline, train them to be ice road truckers and fishermen. This would save the taxpayers a lot of money, help populate Alaska and also get some productive work done. It would also rehabilitate many of these prisoners since they would be given a second chance.

We have some examples of this in history. The British sent their convicts to Australia and the Russians sent theirs to Siberia.
