Ron Paul, the one true conservative

CBS had a story Sunday on the campaign to eliminate the penny. These
people have essentially an economic model based on the principles of
conservatism. In this particular instance, their passion to eliminate
the penny is an example of penny wise, pound foolish. Secondly, the
penny is more than just a tradition in our currency system: it allows
us to recapture synergies we can't economically harvest any other
way. This is called "gleaning" in the Bible: the Book of Ruth is
instructive in this regards. Waste not, want not is a constant theme
in the economics of the Bible: it is woven into the fabric of the
culture. In other words, the currency system isn't broke and it don't
need fixing and eliminating the penny will degrade the grace and
elegance of the structures and processes which underlie our financial
and commercial mechanisms as well as represent the origin of the
economic model of the US Constitution.
Among other things, the penny is God's favorite coin. When you pour
them into a collection plate, they sound like the delighted laughter
of the littlest Angels.
I mean, if your economic/financial model does not contain synergies,
eliminating the penny makes sense. And if eliminating the penny makes
sense, then Ron Paul is the only true heir to the principles of
conservatism Ronald Reagan represents in the common consciousness of
Rush Limbaugh, Grover Norquist and Phil Gramm, as proxies for the
Ditto Heads and junior Brown Shirts of CPAC and the Karl Rove wing of
the GOP.
And it is the principles of conservatism that progressive Democrats
and establishment Republicans, like Dick Lugar, must excise from the
legislative processes. Currently, McCain and Huckabee are running on
the platform of preserving the principles of conservatism as the
dominant paradigm since 1986. The Clintons basically embraced this
dominant paradigm when they were in the Governor's mansion. Obama is
running a campaign based on the progressive federalism Democrats have
always run things since the New Deal. It's how we put a man on the
moon.
It isn't a coincidence that, every time a Shuttle has crashed, a
conservative has been in the Oval Office and Congress was dominated by
the principles of conservatism. Phil Gramm was basically running the
budget process in 1986 and the Contract With America had been running
the budget with the majority of the majority since 1995 when Bushie
brought the principles of conservatism to the White House budget
process. Between Bushie, Grover Norquist and Jim Sensenbrenner, we
are lucky we can still launch weather balloons. The Columbia crash
was just Murhpy's Law waiting to happen and the principles of
conservatism generally eliminate the various buffers between the law
of averages and redundant systems until Murphy's Law becomes the
defining constraint.
Jim Kimsey introduced me to synergies and it was apparent to me at
that moment that he didn't know what he was talking about. I knew
exactly what he was talking about and he didn't. It was a buzz word
he had picked up as a stock broker and he obviously had used it to
explain investments to clients, but it was just part of his shtick,
his song and dance. We were talking about a restaurant he owned and I
was running and he told me I had to goose the synergies and I asked
him what he meant by "synergies" and he said it was connected to the
whole being greater than the sum of the parts. The restaurant we were
talking about had synergies coming out of the wazoo but the facility
was worn out and we couldn't begin to capture the synergies made
possible by the essential mechanism of the place: location, location,
location. For what ever reasons, Kimsey didn't want to put the
capital into the place that would create the money pump necessary to
exploit the synergies already available to the enterprise. One of the
principles of conservatism is The Golden Rule: them what gots the
gold, rules. They may rule with stupidity or they may rule with
wisdom, but they rule, them what gots the gold. I finally hypnotized
Kimsey and activated executive capacity I knew he had developed as the
ADC to Creighton Abrams and focused his attention usefully on the
problem. He ended up doing exactly what I told him to do and the
place is still a neat little money pump, humming along on M Street.
After he fired me. It's like that Jewess in Schindler's List who
tells the commandant how to build the barracks and gets shot, where
upon the commandant tells them to do what she said.
If you employ gestalt modeling in organizational performance,
synergies are obvious. If you employ the principles of conservatism,
you are like a blind man describing an elephant. And that's how Rush
Limbaugh and the people who want to eliminate the penny see the
world.
And that's the truth.
Just for the record, the turn-out in Texas and Ohio for the Democrat
primaries will foreshadow the utter collapse of conservatism as a
cohesive ideological factor in the American body politic. Rush
Limbaugh may want to blame McCain for the unfolding electoral disaster
for the GOP, but the problem is 25 years of the principles of
conservatism as the dominant paradigm. Understanding the toxic
effects of the principles of conservatism is like becoming aware of
high blood pressure: both are a silent killer until you become aware
of the danger. That's the first, and most important, step in a
rational change process. Then, you can begin to compare the
principles of conservatism to not conservatism and from there, change
is a matter of freezing, moving and re-freezing.
And that, too, is the truth.
