Hey kids, learn the facts about your daddy's SUV....

FACT: SUV's burn more gas than cars

FACT: SUV's flip over 3 times as much as cars, causing death and
paralysis mainly by spinal cord injuries.

FACT: SUV's increase our dependence on foreigners (don't we instead
love Independence?).

FACT: SUV's add to global warming

FACT: SUV's increase childhood asthma

FACT: SUV's are more likely to injure or kill drivers in cars than
other cars are

FACT: SUV's make oil companies and car companies more wealthy hence
more politically powerful and able to hijack our politicians to do
their bidding (like start wars in oil rich places)

FACT: SUV's block the views of cars that are behind them

FACT: SUV's make traffic move more slowly through intersections
because people can't see around them

FACT: SUV's use up more steel and other resources in their production

FACT: SUV's add more pollutants into America's air than cars

FACT: SUV's back over more children because the rear sight line is
higher than cars

FACT: SUV's increase everyone's insurance premiums

FACT: SUV's make people spend more money on gas which is money they
could use for other things

FACT: SUV's flip over highway guardrails because the rails were
designed for the center-of-gravity of cars, not SUV's

FACT: SUV's are exempted from the safety and environmental rules that
apply to other autos

FACT: SUV's roll over with particular frequency: 5 times per 100
accidents, compared to 3.8 times per 100 crashes for pickup trucks, 2
per 100 crashes for minivans and 1.7 times per 100 crashes for cars,
according to federal traffic statistics."

FACT: SUV's are a worse place to be in a rollover than a car, since
SUV roofs are not made to hold the extreme weight of these vehicles

FACT: SUV's Rollover death rates have been jumping, from an average of
1200 per year during the 1990s to 2049 in 2000 alone

FACT: SUV's Insurance adjusters have identified a fairly new type of
accident which occurs in SUVs-the SUV survives but all of its
occupants are killed

FACT: SUV's Csaba Csere, Editor, Car & Driver: "In every measurement
of dynamic ability on pavement, cars outperform trucks

FACT: SUV's Many of the auto executives who have been most responsible
for SUV popularity, notably Clotaire Rapaille of Chrysler and Bob
Lutz, who has worked for all three big American automakers, choose not
to drive them because they feel safer in cars.

FACT: SUV's SUVs killed 10.6 percent of the pedestrians they hit in
the United States from 1995 to 2000, while midsized and small SUVs
killed 6.6 percent. Minivans and cars were far less deadly, killing
about 5 percent of pedestrians they hit

FACT: SUV's Drivers in SUVs appear to be particularly likely to run
over people while backing up in driveways, especially children who are
not tall enough to be seen out of the high rear windows of SUVs

FACT: SUV's The percentage of SUV owners who say they use their
vehicles for actual off-road driving varies from 1 to 13 percent,
depending on how the question is asked, executives at the big auto
firms say

FACT: SUV's People have a misconception that four-wheel drive will
help them maneuver and stop quickly in mud and snow, when this is not
true. SUVs stop much more slowly than other vehicles, making them
particularly bad to drive in slick conditions

FACT: SUV's SUV advertising caters to people who are described by
automakers' market research as being especially self-centered

FACT: SUV's By driving up demand for oil, SUV drivers have driven up
the price of gas. This accomplishes several things. First, it raises
gas prices for everyone. Second, it reinforces US involvement in the
Middle East as we try to keep the supply flowing and price down.
Third, it makes sure that Saudi Arabia and other countries whose
citizens fund terrorism make more for every barrel of oil they sell,
even if they don't sell it to us. Way to go, patriot.

FACT: SUV's produce several times the smog causing and ozone-depleting
gases of standard cars. They have contributed greatly to the growing
walls of smog that hover over cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix,
Houston, Denver, Sacramento and elsewhere. At the local level, these
clouds of poisoning gas decrease both the quality and length of
people's lives.

FACT: SUV's make some people feel big, strong and powerful, even if
they are a couch potato.

Well, we have a choice, we can continue to drive our dangerous and
image-conscious SUV's, etc. and helplessly suckle from the breast of
the Middle East or we can use great American Ingenuity to employ
peaceful social and technological solutions to this problem, most of
which are available today. In other words, we can consume like pigs
and get slaughtered or we can cast off the deadly yoke of oil and
finally move forward.

oilman as sure as a hybrid-electric Toyota gets 50 miles per gallon.
