Situated within a dense forest at the foothills of the
Catskill
Mountains on the outskirts of Han***, New York, Islamberg
is not an
ideal place for a summer vacation unless, of course, you
are an
exponent of the Jihad or a fan of Osama bin Laden.

Jihad: Interpretation and Exceptionalism

The title of my talk is "On Interpretation
and
Exceptionalism" and it deals both with the way
in which
most people in the U.S. perceive Islam, and
the way in
which Islam-in particular, its scripture, the
Qur'an-deals with the concept of jihad.
As someone who has been asked to speak about
Islam only
a couple of times in the ten years I've been
at Ithaca
College, it's obvious to me that this new
interest in it
is the result not of positive developments but
of
people's desire to make sense of the attacks
on the U.S.
allegedly by a group of Muslim men, which has
left them
fearful, angry, and bewildered.

The irony is that looking to Islam alone may
not provide
the answers, or the closure, that people are
seeking.
As Robin Wright says, "mining the Quran for
incendiary
quotes is essentially pointless. Religions
evolve, and
there is usually enough ambiguity in their
founding
scriptures to let them evolve in any
direction. If Osama
Bin Laden were a Christian, and he still
wanted to
destroy the World Trade Center, he would cite
Jesus'
rampage against the money-changers. If he
didn't want to
destroy the World Trade Center, he could
stress the
Sermon on the Mount."
Even if one doesn't agree with this view, the
point is
that every religion-or secular ideology, for
that
matter-offers the possibility of violence and
peace,
oppression and liberation, depending on who
is
interpreting it, how, and in what particular
contexts.
As I always say, there is little family
resemble between
modern liberation theology and the
Christianity of the
Crusades, the Inquisition, and the Conquest.
And yet, ignoring that every religion is open
to
multiple interpretations, many people are
attacking
Muslims for making "it sound like there are
two versions
of the Koran floating around out there. If so,
what is
the difference between the Koran that the
Terrorists are
reading, and the Koran that the rest of the
Muslim world
is reading? . . . I need to have the 'real'
Islam please
stand up." (This is from an article forwarded
to me by a
friend with no title or bye-line).

Yes this is true - unfortunately the most respected Islamic
"Scholars", who are regarded as knowing what "Real" Islam is seem to
differ:

"Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the
Prophet
sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said: "I swear by the One in Whose Hands
my soul
is, I wish that I would fight for the sake of Allaah (i.e., Jihaad)
and get
martyred, then return and fight again and get martyred, then return
and fight
again and get martyred" (Bukhaari & Muslim)

Khomeini stated that the "Quran says: kill,
imprison! Why are you only clinging to the part that talks about
mercy? Mercy
is against God"; and, "We need a Khalifa (leader of Islamic state) who
would
chop hands, cut throat, stone people."

Pakistani radical Muslim theorist Syed Abul Ala
Maududi declared that "Islam requires the earth - not just a
portion, but the whole planet - not because the sovereignty
over the earth should be wrested from one Nation or several
Nations and vested in one particular Nation, but because the
entire mankind should benefit ... from 'Islam' which is the
programme of well-being for all humanity.

Maududi insisted that non-Muslims, although free to practice
their "false, man-made way," have "absolutely no right to
seize the reins of power in any part of God's earth nor to
direct the collective affairs of human beings according to
their own misconceived doctrines." If they do, "the believers
would be under an obligation to do their utmost to dislodge
them from political power and to make them live in
subservience to the Islamic way of life."

The same author-who says he's a Catholic-also
says he
doesn't "want to hear [the] history about the
Crusades,
or the U.S. foreign policy crap, or . . .
comparisons
[of Islam] to Christianity and Judaism." Thus,
while
wanting Muslims to explain which Qur'an we are
reading
and which is the real Islam, he himself
chooses not to
explain the difference between the bible that
the
Crusaders and Conquistadors were reading and
the bible
he has been reading, nor to convince others
why his
Christianity is the "real" one.

Such a strategy not only lays upon Muslims a
burden that
believers in other religions refuse to bear
themselves,
but it also obscures the fact that the
bloodiest
conflicts, like the two World Wars, have had
secular,
not religious roots. Even those conflicts we
think of as
religious can be shown to be about power and
resources,
not merely ideology. This is no less true of
the
Crusades, than it is of the conflict between
Catholics
and Protestants in Ireland, or Jews and
Muslims in the
Middle East, or even the attacks of September
11th.
We might, therefore, be better served by
trying to
understand the political and economic
conditions that
engender conflicts and religious extremism;
but this
would require us to focus on the nature of our
own
foreign policies and also to recognize the
complicity of
secularism, capitalism, and liberal democracy
in
creating a global division of labor that, in
privileging
the few at the expense of the many, has
provided the
breeding grounds for much of modern day
extremism,
religious or not.

The Crusades again? Sheesh! Can't you do any better than that?

Second, even if we are to refocus attention
away from
politics and economics by looking only to
religion to
explain the events of 9/11th, I doubt that
the
confusion, hostility and fear most people are
feeling
these days are conducive to understanding
Islam or for
engaging in an honest dialogue with Muslims.
Ironically, even those people who are not
necessarily
angry with Islam will find it hard to have
such a
dialogue so as long as they continue to assume
that
learning about Islam will enable them to make
sense of
9/11 inasmuch as this expectation arises in
the
assumption that there is a connection between
Islam and
terrorism.
It is this assumption that reveals the extent
to which
people think of Islam as exceptional and, in
so
thinking, do deep epistemic violence to it.
Let me
clarify with an example.

Praise be to God, who revealed the Book, controls the clouds, defeats
factionalism, and says in His Book: "But when the forbidden months are
past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, seize
them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of
war)"; and peace be upon our Prophet, Muhammad Bin-'Abdallah, who
said: I have been sent with the sword between my hands to ensure that
no one but God is worshipped, God who put my livelihood under the
shadow of my spear and who inflicts humiliation and scorn on those who
disobey my orders.
On that basis, and in compliance with God's order, we issue the
following fatwa to all Muslims:
The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and
military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in
any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the
al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in
order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated
and unable to threaten any Muslim. This is in accordance with the
words of Almighty God, "and fight the pagans all together as they
fight you all together," and "fight them until there is no more tumult
or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God."

Terrorism and Islam's Exceptionalism
Modern forms of terrorism were introduced into
the
Middle East in the 1940s by Jewish groups in
then
British-occupied Palestine. It was the Irgun,
the Stern
gang, and the Hagana that began the practice
of bombing
"gathering places [and] crowded Arab areas [in
an
attempt to] terrorize the Arab
community" (Smith, 1992:
19; 140). The Stern gang even attacked Jewish
banks,
resulting in "Jewish loss of life" (120). The
Irgun, as
we know, "slaughtered about 250 men, women and
children
whose mutilated bodies were stuffed down
wells" in the
village of Dair Yassin (143).
Even though many such terror tactics continued
until
fairly recent times, people in the U.S. did
not put
world Jewry on call by asking Jews to explain
what
Judaism has to say about killing innocent
civilians.
People may have denounced these terrorist
groups-freedom
fighters to many-but they did not call on all
Jews to
explain which Torah or Talmud the Jewish
terrorists were
reading, or asked the "real" Judaism to "stand
up."
Why, then, this assault on Muslims to explain
what their
"bible"-as that savant, Larry King, calls the
Qur'an-teaches about violence? (He even
badgered Hanan
Ashrawi, assuming that because she's
Palestinian, she's
a Muslim, even though she's not.) The same
people who
say (like the anonymous author I quoted
earlier does)
that they don't give a "rat' ---" about Islam
nonetheless are shrieking for the "real" Islam
to stand
up!
In an atmosphere where only Muslims are
expected to keep
protesting our humanity and to defend our
religion, my
politics dictated that I should not speak at
all in any
forum on Islam. But, my religion teaches the
jihad of
knowledge and, as a Muslim, this jihad is
obligatory for
me. That is why I am here today, to speak to
you about
jihad.


Jihad in the Qur'an
The word jihad means "striving" or "struggle,"
and not
"war". So, the Qur'an speaks of the jihad of
the soul,
of the tongue, of the pen, of faith, of
morality, and so
on. This is the "greater jihad" and it is what
allows us
Muslims to actualize our identity as Muslims.
There is also the jihad of arms whose aim is
to struggle
in the cause of God; this is the "smaller
jihad" and it
permits fighting as a means of self-
protection. There
are a number of verses in the Qur'an about
this form of
jihad and I will quote two of the main ones:
"Permission to fight is given to those against
whom war
is being wrongfully waged-and verily God has
indeed the
power to succor them-those who have been
driven from
their homelands against all right for no other
reason
than their saying, 'Our Sustainer is God.'
For, if God
had not enabled people to defend themselves
against one
another, all monasteries and churches and
synagogues and
mosques-in all of which God's name is
abundantly
extolled-would surely have been destroyed
[before] now"
(22: 39-40).

Again the Islamic scholars do not agree on this -

"He [Ibn Taymiyya] also said: 'Allah made it lawful to kill peopleas
much as necessary for the good of humanity. As He said [in the Koran,
2:217]: "The temptation [of idolatry] [fitna] is worse than killing."

Khomeini accordingly delivered notorious rebuke to the
Islam-is-a-religion-of-peace crowd: "Those who know
nothing of
Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those
[who say
this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the
unbelievers just
as they would kill you all! Does this mean that
Muslims should
sit back until they are devoured by [the
unbelievers]? Islam
says: Kill them, put them to the sword and scatter
[their
armies].... Islam says: Whatever good there is
exists thanks to
the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People
cannot be
made obedient except with the sword! The sword is
the key to
Paradise, which can be opened only for the Holy
Warriors!
There are hundreds of other [Qur'anic] psalms and
Hadiths
[sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war
and to
fight. Does all this mean that Islam is a religion
that
prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those
foolish souls
who make such a claim."

Guess you're gonna get spat on there since Ibn Taymiyya if the father
of Islamic Fundamentalism and Ayatollah Khomeini is the latest and
most respected great Faghib in Islam - better get the Kleenex babe :

Surahs of the Quran used by Islamists to justify attacking non-Muslims
to establish a Caliphate.

These are mere excerpts of the Holy Quran. These excerpts are not
comprehensive of the message of the Quran nor are they meant to be
representative of the totality of its message. The sole reason for
reproducing these Surahs here is to note which Surahs the Islamists
refer to repeatedly to establish the rational for their goals and
activities. These are not all the Surahs referred to by the Islamists,
but they are central to their arguments.

Surah 61:4 "Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle
array, as if they were a solid cemented structure,"

Surah 2:190-193 "Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you but
do not transgress limits...And slay them wherever ye catch them. And
turn them out from where they have turned you out; for persecution is
worse than slaughter; But fight them not at the sacred Mosque unless
they first fight you there; But if they fight you, slay them. Such is
the reward of those who reject faith. But if they cease, Allah is oft-
forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight them on until there is no more
persecution. And the religion becomes Allah's. But if they cease,
Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression"

Surah 9:38-39 "O ye who believe! What is the matter with you, that,
when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily
to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter?
But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the
Hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous
penalty, and put others in your place; but Him ye would not harm in
the least. For Allah hath power over all things. Unless ye go forth,
He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your
place; but Him ye would not harm in the least. For Allah hath power
over all things,"

Surah 8:59-70 "Their state is like that of the people of Pharaoh, and
of those before them who treated their Lord's signs as lies. We
therefore destroy them in their sins, and We drowned the people of
Pharaoh; for they were all doers of wrong. The worst beasts truly in
the sight of God are the thankless who will not believe; They with
whom thou hast leagued, and who are ever breaking their league, and
who fear not God! If thou take them in war, then, by the example of
their fate, scatter those who shall follow them - that they may be
warned: Or if thou fear treachery from any people, throw back their
treaty to them as thou fairly mayest, for God loveth not the
treacherous. And think not that the infidels shall escape Us! The
shall not weaken God....O Prophet! stir up the faithful to the
fight. Twenty of you who stand firm shall vanquish two hundred: and
if there be an hundred of you they shall vanquish a thousand of the
infidels, for they are a people devoid of understanding....No prophet
hath been enabled to take captives until he had made great slaughter
in the earth. Ye desire the passing fruitions of this world, but God
desireth the next life for you. And God is mighty and wise.

Sura 9:5 "And when the sacred months are passed, kill those who join
other gods with God wherever ye shall find them; and seize them,
besiege them, and lay wait for them with every kind of ambush: but if
they shall convert, and observe prayer, and pay the obligatory alms,
then let them go their way, for God is gracious, merciful.

Sura 9:12 "But if, after alliance made, they break their oaths and
revile your religion, then do battle with the ring-leaders of
infidelity - for no oaths are binding with them - that they may
desist. What! will ye not fight against those Meccans who have
broken their oaths and aimed to expel your Apostle, and attacked you
first? Will ye dread them? God is more worthy of your fear, if ye
are believers! So make war on them: By your hands will God chastise
them, and will put them to shame, and will give you victory over them,
and will heal the bosoms of a people who believe;"

Sura 9:30 "Make war upon such of those to whom the Scriptures have
been given as believe not in God, or in the Last Day, and who forbid
not that which God and His Apostle have forbidden, and who profess not
the profession of the truth, until they pay tribute out of hand, and
they be humbled. The Jews say, "Ezra is a son of God"; and the
Christians say, "The Messiah is a son of God." Such the sayings in
their mouths! They resemble the saying of the infidels of old! God
do battle with them! How are they misguided? They take their
teachers, and their monks, and the Messiah, son of Mary, for lords
besides God, though bidden to worship one God only. There is no God
but He! Far from His glory be what they associate with Him! Fain
would they put out God's light with their mouths: but God only
desireth to perfect His light, albeit the infidels abhor it. He it is
who hath sent His Apostle with the guidance and a religion of the
truth, that He may make it victorious over every other religion,
albeit they who assign partners to God be averse from it.\

The second verse is,
". . . fight in God's cause against those who
wage war
against you, but do not commit aggression-for,
verily,
God does not love aggressors. And slay them
wherever you
may come upon them, and drive them away from
wherever
they drove you away-for oppression is even
worse than
killing" (2:190).
Although references to killing make most of us
recoil,
it's important not to let our horror become an
alibi for
refusing to recognize some transparent truths.
First, one can kill huge numbers of people,
while also
avoiding any casualties to oneself, without
even
fighting a war. Consider the economic
sanctions on Iraq
that are killing off nearly 5,000 children a
month, all
because our government opposes one man. My
point is not
to justify war, but to draw attention to one
of its
faces that we routinely ignore.

Your point is moral relativity - which far too many of the gay liberal
Democrats buy into but this is the real point:

Saudi Arabia, which follows the fundamentalist Wahhabi school of
Islam, had become a natural haven for radical Islamist scholars,
including the radical Egyptian Islamist Ayman al-Zawahri.

The ruling family, which had been criticized for its pro-western
stance, seized upon the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as a cause,
which could rally Islamist support and deflect internal criticism.

Osama Bin Laden has continued a strain of militant Islam

The kingdom now threw its political and financial weight behind the
Afghan jihad, which was also backed by Pakistan and the United
States.

Pakistan found it useful to nurture its own jihad movements, which
could be harnessed in its territorial dispute with India over
Kashmir.

The Saudi Islamist Saad al-Faqih says that the Islamic scholars in
Saudi Arabia were careful at that time not to talk in terms of a jihad
against anyone other than the Soviet occupiers of Afghanistan.

But he says that the war in Afghanistan created a longer-term
"mentality of jihad" which some found hard to abandon.

Once the Soviet forces had been expelled from Afghanistan, Azzam
believed that the Arab fighters should return home and resume their
former occupations, according to Dr Tamimi.

But followers of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad movement, an extremist
offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood led by al-Zawahri, argued that
"Afghanistan should be a platform for the liberation of the entire
Muslim world".

Bin Laden's followers could not accept US troops in Saudi Arabia

After devoting their lives to the liberation of Muslim territory from
foreign occupation, it was a bitter blow for Bin Laden and his Arab
mujahideen to see land they regarded as sacred occupied by "infidel"
soldiers.

Zawahri's growing influence over Osama Bin Laden and the al-Qaeda
organisation paved the way for the notorious 1998 "declaration of war"
against the United States and the spate of terrorist attacks on
American targets that followed.

Second, Islam did not invent war; it merely
teaches a
specific approach to it. This approach
forbids
aggression, or attacking one's enemies
unawares, and it
also instructs Muslims to cease hostilities
if
aggression against them ceases. The last point
may seem
unimportant until one recalls that the U.S.
destroyed
Nagasaki and Hiroshima after the Japanese had
broadcast
their terms of surrender. More recently, the
U.S. army
shot about 100,000 Iraqi troops retreating
from the
battlefield during the Gulf War, with senior
U.S.
generals calling it a "duck shoot."

I believe you mean "Turkey shoot" or perhaps "Shooting Ducks in a
pond" - but with pigeon English who really cares? I remember the
"Highway of Death" (from Basra) quite well - I have never laughed that
hard in my entire life! BTW - the Nips did not agree to surrender
until three days after Nagasaki was bombed - where did you go to
school?

Third, it is not just any type of aggression
Muslims
must resist, but religious persecution. Thus,
jihad is
not for extending territories, protecting
political or
economic interests, or killing one's foes,
reasons for
which all nations, including Muslim, generally
go to
war.

Dawa literally means just "an invitation".
Most Muslims
in South Asia use the word to mean inviting
people to a
dinner party. In America the term has come to
mean
inviting people to understand Islam.
Importance of Dawa in Islam
Quran and the hadith of Prophet Muhammad
(peace be upon
him) give numerous references to the
importance and the
obligations of Dawa:
"Invite all to the way of your Lord with
wisdom and
beautiful advice." (Quran 16:125)
"You are made witnesses unto mankind" (Quran
2:143)
"Let there arise a group inviting to all
that is good"
(Quran 3:104)
Provided below are some suggestions that
Muslim students
as individuals and as a group can undertake
to
accomplish the above goal. (more at their web

The group is best know for their work with Islam in Prisons
The III&E Contribution Over a Decade

The Institute of Islamic Information & Education (III&E) was
established
in April 1985 and began its field operation in July 1986. The
III&E
established an Islamic Reading Room in Chicago and opened its
door to the
public over the Thanksgiving weekend of November 1988. The main
goals of
the III&E are to remove misinformation and misperceptions of
Islam and
Muslims from the people's minds through education of the masses
and to
educate those who enter Islam. A specific goal is to reach every
home in
North America with the message of Islam within a reasonable time
frame.
The Institute has published over eighty brochures, flyers,
booklets and
articles over the years to disseminate information about Islam
and Muslims
to the American people. Distribution of da'wah literature across
North
America through Islamic organizations and independent da'wah
workers is
one of the main activities of the Institute.
Correspondence: In the fall of 1986 the Institute published its
first
brochure and began its distribution in a Conference held in
Orange County
California. Very soon this brochure found its way into prisons
and letters
began coming to the Institute. As the distribution of brochures
increased
so did letters received by the Institute. Over the years
correspondence
has increased steadily and has reached an average of 2,000
letters a year
(last five-year mean) from prisons. This figure is 61% of the
total
correspondence handled by the Institute. There are indications
that each
piece of literature of the Institute sent to a prisoner is
circulated and
read by at least ten persons; based on this estimate the III&E
is reaching
out to more than 20,000 individuals a year in the prison system.
The cost
of correspondence is somewhere $25 to $40 per letter and
enclosures, which
includes management, rent, utilities, personnel, material and
postage. The
accounting system at the Institute does not allow clean
separation of the
cost of correspondence with the prisoners.

This same group now joins forces with the radicalized members of the
Nation of Islam, headquarted in Chicago, the Bridgeview Mosque
Palestinian Jihad group and the newly imported Iraqi, Iranian and GCC
Arabs at De Paul University in an ominous and deadly cabal. And since
most Black Muslims are gay due to their many years in prison, they
join forces with Chicago's politically powerful Gay Mafia since the
Gay bars of Lakeview offer relief and new dates galore for the
enjoyment of De Paul's newly imported Muslims.

And all the while Richie Daly worries about the Olympics in 2016 and
fiddles while the city is ready to come under repeated attacks from
these crazed Gay Muslims - the Negro inmates in Cook County Jail are
responsible for 40% of the Sexually transmitted diseases in Chicago
and it gets worse since Most Black Muslims have either HIV or AIDS!

* Muslims have been the world's largest suppliers of OPIATE DRUGS for
all of recorded history and they are the LARGEST GROUP OF DOPE FIENDS
ON EARTH. Chronic Drug Abuse causes Serious BRAIN DAMAGE- the Arabs
have FRIED THEIR MEAGER BRAINS for thousands of years on hard drugs.

* Muslim males are also HIGHLY PROMISCUOUSand will have sex with as
many women as they can afford, also with men (which many prefer - 52%
of Saudi males admit they are homosexuals) and even domestic
animalssince it is blessed by Islam. Promiscuity leads to VENEREAL
DISEASEwhich often goes untreated for many years and atrophies large
portions of the brain. VD ALSO LEADS TO SERIOUS BRAIN DAMAGE

* Muslims often marry sisters, half sisters and close cousins and it
is not uncommon for fathers to marry (rape is more like it) their own
daughters. This practice evolved in the Stone Age to protect the
Tribal grouping that most Muslims still live in. FORNICATION WITH
FAMILY MEMBERS ALSO CAUSES SERIOUS MENTAL RETARDATION AND BRIAN
DAMAGE.

These dilemmas have been a constant or Arab history and the lack of
medical care has compounded this societal psychosis over thousands of
years, accounting for the nearly incomprehensible thought processes
seen so often in Al-Alam.

Muslims don't just SEEM CRAZY - THEY ARE CRAZY!

The Words Of Samuel Adams:

"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil
Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is
our duty to defend them against all attacks.

Fear not, for I am with you. I have called you by name, you are
Mine. When you pass through the waters, I shall be with you. When
you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the
flames scorch you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of
