One of the biggest problems is dealing with relatives. If a partner
becomes extremely ill, sometimes fundamentalist families come swooping
in and exclude the life partner from visitation or even attending the
funeral. They may throw the partner out of the family home. Marriage
gives the partner rights to fend off relatives.

The original poster probably imagines he has the divine right to
meddle in his relatives' relationships. The does not want to be
thwarted in his malice.
