Kerry cuts Switzerland trip short to push for a filibuster against Alito

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., could not attend the Senate debate on the Supreme
Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. yesterday. He was in Davos,
Switzerland
But late yesterday, Kerry began calling fellow Democratic senators in a
last-minute effort to urge a filibuster to stop the nomination. He decided
to hurry home to press the issue and was expected to arrive today, said
April Boyd, his spokeswoman.

God Bless John Kerry," said Don Stewart, a spokesman for Sen. John Cornyn,
R-Texas, a member of the Judiciary Committee. "He just cinched this whole
nomination. With Senator Kerry, it is Christmas every day."
Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, sounded almost apologetic about
Kerry's move. "No one can complain on this matter that there hasn't been
sufficient time to talk about Judge Alito, pro and con," Reid said on the
Senate floor. "I hope that this matter will be resolved without too much
more talking."

Kerry's call for a filibuster - an effort to stop confirmation by refusing
to close debate and hold a vote - was joined by his fellow Democrat from
Massachusetts, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Under Senate procedures, their objections blocked the Senate Democratic and
Republican leaders from setting Tuesday as the date for a vote on the
confirmation. Instead, the Senate will vote Monday on the question of
whether to close debate.
