Per tony cooper:
What is an "Internet Protocol Camera"? It's the image format, not the
camera, that has to conform to internet protocol as far as I know.
It is a camera that sends it's images over an Ethernet/TCP-IP
connection - as opposed, for instance, to video cable or some
The attraction for me is versatility: the camera is not locked
into anybody's proprietary scheme. Instead one can use many
means for getting to the camera, controlling it, and recording
My immediate agenda is that somebody is breaking into cars in our
neighborhood - at night, of course - and I'd like to be able to
supply somebody who is investigating with some nice clear facial
shots of the people doing it.
Here's an example of what I'm looking at:
The joker in the deck is "clear facial....". I've seen many
snips on the evening news taken from store security cameras where
somebody has robbed the store, essentially looked right into the
camera at fairly close range, yet from the image I don't see how
anybody could identify the person: it's just not detailed enough.
There are hundreds of these things out there - but evaluating the
choices and placing the camera seem to me to be way, way beyond
my expertise (which is essentially nil).
Ah, I see. I was thinking "camera" as in dslr, not security video
Whatever your expertise level, it is greater than mine.
