Just came across this article on display quality. It might have some useful pointers for people concerned about display quality for their photo retouch and viewing needs.
Key points:
Beware of lag on some models.
Quality is dropping while prices are rising.
IHV's don't view colour gamut and accuracy as buying points.
OLEDs look like the future.
Buy a Mac with an Apple monitor (or an iMac with a built in monitor).
These displays are top dogs right out of the box. Calibration (Apple -
eyeball method) shows the unit is near optimum when shipped; and with a
Spyder is near identical to that calibration.
OLED's (such as Sony's) are wonderful, crisp, rich displays. I don't
know to what degree they will be suitable for photo editing. I haven't
seen any built as computer monitors, nor to 24" size, nor to 1080
resolution - matter of time I expect.
