I have a negative scanner (and about 8 film cameras) so I scan the
negatives with Paint Shop, use the scratch removal tool if I have to
(which I haven't found yet in the Gimp) and save them as an uncompressed
TIFF. Then I go to the Linux box and finish with Gimp. (Unfortunately,
Linux is *picky* on scanners...)
Those old parallel port scanners are not supported
but most other scanners should work OK.
I am currently using an old HP SCSI and it works fine...
though a few distros need to have it added to the "group"
or they will only run as root...
But all in all I can use Linux to do most of my work and GIMP has done a
great job for me
Even some of my USB scanners weren't supported.
I'm the Dell Factory rep for my area, and I got called out to replace a
hard drive. I do hardware only, software is left to phone support, so, 5
minute job...install the HDD and make sure it's working. Usually what I do
is start to load Windows and once it gets to the first reboot I split.
This one woman was disabled and working from home. She had to have her
company walk her through the software install, but I decided to stay until
XP was loaded and configured properly. While I was doing that she slips
into the other room and reappears with two scanners, asking if I could use
them. She also had a MAC running so I went to the SANE page and VOILA!
Both of them listed!
Thank you very much!!! One of them is an Epson Perfection and has very
good hardware resolution and gets used the most. Now, if I could just
locate a film scan attachment...
