Some Espon printers (like the 3800) print at 1440 dpi (even if you

What the printer actually prints I suspect is hardware dependent. I was
only talking about what you specify going in. Like cameras, internal
software can do some amazing things. Where it is possible to specify,
gong over 300 doesn't really gain anything.
I currently use an HP B9180, and I have no idea what it is doing
internally. I also have a Canon i9100 that I no longer use for
photography, but I know it is actually printing many dots to create one
of the 300. I don't know how many but it is a lot.
Excellent? Perhaps acceptable when viewed from far enough away.
No, excellent. It depends on your software. I am using LightZone and
it does an excellent job of uprezing. I haven't tried others, but I am
told some are pretty bad. However, what is acceptable to one person may
not be acceptable to another. Having printed the same images on 4x6,
8.5x11 and 13x19 paper, I am hard pressed to see any differences without
using a loupe.
