Picasa has some of the basic tools, but does not have the advanced
features. If you work only in Picasa, you will not be able to
progress to more sophisticated image editing. One of these days you
will have a project that requires the advanced tools and features.
You might as well start with a program that allows you to move up.
Personally, I despise Picasa. It takes over all of your images.
That's a personal opinion, though, and others do like Picasa. I think
Paul Furman uses it, and he does some good stuff. I would never tell
Paul he's using a bad program.
No, I tried Picassa a few years ago & was really impressed but also really annoyed the way it took over my computer <g>. I am testing Adobe Lightroom now though, which is similar but more advanced. The great thing is no file saving required, just browse through the images & make a little adjustment & move on. Then apply that set of adjustments to the next 5 shots, etc..
Both Picasa and Elements have photo organizing ability incorporated in
the program that allow tagging and other ways to organize your files.
That's not been discussed here, and a discussion for another day. At
this point, I'll only say that both have this extra ability.
One other question............. is Picasa the only program that preserves the original automatically ?
I don't really understand that question. I've used Picasa in the
past, but I don't remember an automatic save feature. I think you
must "Save" or "Save As" in *any* editing program. Actually, an
automatic save would be a very bad feature. There are times you edit
something and don't like what you did. You may crop it incorrectly,
for example. You don't want that automatically saved.
You may be referring to "lossless" saving of .jpgs. That's not an
automatic save; it's saving without compression. I won't go further
with this because it's not a factor in what you will be doing. The
loss will not be noticeable to you, and it doesn't have to with the
type of program you will be using.
