How long before we have an equally unusable 50mp camera where we can see a gnat 2 miles away. For what reason I don't really know.

Never. Absent an unrealistic lens and no atmosphere in the way, there is no way to see a gnat at 2 miles with a 50 mpix sensor.

More pixels will need a much higher resolution lens than we have already to actually have more resolution in the image. As it is in most cases 12m is too many already.

What silliness. Does it even occur to you that a doubling of pixels from 12 Mpix to 24 is only a 41% increase in resolution for a given sensor area?

Does it occur to you that some of us like printing large photos?

Does it occur to you that the resolution of these 21 - 24 Mpix cameras is about the same as the high end MF cameras - just with fewer overall pixels.

These 'protests' over higher resolution remind me too well of people protesting the beginning of autofocus, IS lenses, HSS flash, digital over film, full-frame ... in every case: "It's not needed", "It's gadgetry", etc...

The real point is, and the Nikon fans seem to have some digesting it is that Canon beat Nikon to full frame and to higher pixel counts leaving Nikon users cold.

Nikon do not have their own sensor fab. They will always trail in implementing sensors.

And boo-hoo, they will always be matching the pixel race as they always have. And in time you will upgrade. And you know it.
